Hi, My S-type 3.0 SE Auto, registered 2000, 63K miles, displays “Gearbox Fault” after a few miles and then usually, but not always, refuses to change up from 4th (I think) to 5th/drive regardless of engine revs. I have had the engine up to 4k rpm and higher for long periods which gives a road speed of only 70mph (and eventually slowed down to avoid wearing out the engine). Hi Glyn, the problem I had on my S-Type turned out to be a faulty knock sensor located on the top of the engine in the vee of the cylinder head, not very easy to get at, however I got it fixed by the local independant garage that I use at a cost of £246-15.
